For the love of mangoes

No one can have failed to spot the explosion of fruit on almost every street, hillside and meadow in Antigua in recent weeks. Mango season transforms our island into a profusion of juicy finger-licking, chin-dribbling, jam-making mania.

But how many of you know an Edward from an Irwin? Or a Kent from a Julie? On July 21 and 22, crowds turned out in tribute to the humble fruit – and get a little edible education in the process. The annual Mango Festival gives creative residents a chance to showcase their talents transforming the fruit’s myriad varieties into everything from jams and chutneys, to smoothies, ice cream, wines, fritters and cakes.

With the season making an early appearance this year, organisers brought the long-running popular event forward a month to ensure maximum usage of the sumptuous stuff. Set against the verdant backdrop of magnificent Christian Valley, the eighth annual festival featured an abundance of food stalls, children’s activities, live music and contests between some of the island’s most talented chefs and bartenders.

More than 20 vendors took part this year, with around two dozen different types of the nutritious fruit on display. The second day of festivities saw events heat up as cooks and bar staff whipped up delicious mango-infused concoctions and vied for the top prizes. Chef Gregory Williams, of Sugar Ridge, emerged victorious in the culinary competition, while Angenick Looby, also of Sugar Ridge, took home the coveted pastry award. Hermitage Bay Resort’s Kason Tapper was declared the event’s winning bartender. Governor General Dame Louise Lake Tack and Agriculture Minister Hilson Baptiste were on hand to present the awards.

globalbanklogoBosses at Global Bank group may be more used to focusing their attentions on finance. But this month it was cricket causing a buzz at the long-standing Antiguan institution. The company was delighted to announce it has become a founding sponsor for the Antigua Hawksbills T20 team ahead of the inaugural Caribbean Premier League (CPL) competition.

Global’s CEO Brian Stuart-Young said staff were delighted to have the opportunity to support the Hawksbills, currently being coached by homegrown sporting legend Sir Vivian Richards. “Given Antigua’s strong heritage in producing great cricketers, there’s every expectation that the Hawksbills will reach the finals,” Mr Stuart-Young said, adding, “The Hawksbills have a well-rounded team led by Marlon Samuels, and there is anticipation that Ricky Ponting will perform exceptionally to mark his retirement from professional cricket."

The locally-owned Global group – now in its 30th year of providing international financial services, wealth management and investment guidance - has been a regular corporate sponsor for local sporting events and individual athletes.
