May 2013 Edition

gemma-handy-picGreetings from the new editor of Luxury Locations The Magazine

Hello and a very warm welcome from me, Gemma, and the rest of the Luxury Locations team to all of our valued readers. I am delighted to be joining the team here at Luxury Locations and am looking forward to working with you all. Last month marked my 10th year as a professional journalist since completing my formal training in the UK in 2003. Over the last decade I have worked on one of Britain’s largest daily newspapers, as a correspondent for BBC World Service and freelanced for news agencies across the globe. I have been living in the Caribbean for the last seven years, six of them in the Turks & Caicos Islands where I headed a weekly newspaper, designed, launched and edited a new magazine, and also enjoyed a stint in television. I moved to Antigua - where I have been a happy visitor for the last nine years - in summer 2012, dragging with me a huge suitcase, some big dreams and an even larger dog.

Our newest edition of Luxury Locations The Magazine is being distributed as I write. In the meantime, I invite you to enjoy the inaugural edition of our exciting new Mini-Mag. This enticing online publication will be emailed out every few weeks to 6,500 clients both here and abroad, featuring all the latest news from Antigua & Barbuda, the real estate market plus hot offers from our advertisers. This time, the emphasis is firmly on Mother’s Day which falls this Sunday. So if, like me, you’re suffering from last minute panic and don’t want to disappoint mom, check out our selection of special promotions to give your mother the day she deserves.

Hats Off to Mount Gay Rum Party

Where we went: Mount Gay Rum Red Cap party at Reef Gardens, English Harbour
What we ate: We tantalised our tastebuds and seduced our senses with a mouth-watering array of island-style barbecued cuisine and classic American comfort food, including juicy beefburgers, mac ‘n’ cheese, johnny cake, and rice and peas.
What we drank: A free bar featuring the quintessential Bajan liquor – the world’s oldest rum – ensured an early kickstart to this fun-loving bash staged as part of Antigua Sailing Week activities. Mount Gay was the tipple of choice for most partygoers throughout the evening. We enjoyed ours with a delicious coconut water mixer.
Who we saw: Early birds soaked up the sounds of a swinging steel band before the music took a nostalgic step back through the 80s when DJ Who took to the decks. We shimmied and strutted our way through the hedonistic decade to the sounds of Madonna, Michael Jackson and ACDC. Later, high-energy live band 1761 kicked the party up a notch with their soca-infused covers of popular tunes, transforming the dance floor into a frenzy of red hatted, rum-guzzling revellers.

Driftwood House Property Pick – Tranquillity in Turtle Cove

Tucked inside secluded Turtle Cove bay – named after the endangered reptiles which frequent this tropical paradise - Driftwood House is one of Antigua’s most spectacular properties. This delightful, colonial-style seven-bedroom home offers the ultimate in luxury living. The sprawling 1.74-acre landscaped grounds are accessed by a magnificent driveway flanked by protected mangroves.

From glorious Royal palm trees and flowering seagrapes, to beautiful bougainvillea and healing aloe vera plants, the garden is a haven for those who love to soak up the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. Vibrant colours attract hummingbirds, butterflies and dragonflies while the tranquil surrounds are the perfect place for al fresco evening relaxation where the only sound is the gentle chirrup of native tree frogs.
Ideal for boat owners, this spectacular property is complemented by a private dock overlooking the sparkling azure waters of the island’s east coast.

Designed by acclaimed local architect Andrew Goodenough, the 11,000 square foot interior boasts breathtaking vistas from every room. A generous wraparound balcony affords stunning views of the adjacent nature sanctuary, along with the property’s vast swimming pool and jacuzzi. Sensitively created with the pristine environment in mind, this low density development at The Peninsula also has two guest houses, perfect for visitors.

All the recent news on Pearns Point, set to be one of the most spectacular developments in the Caribbean.  Things have come a long way in the last two months; a visit from the Prime Minister, new roads, and a decreasing number of opportunities to own a unique piece of Antigua – now with 9 plots sold by Luxury Locations Real Estate there are only 50 left. Aerial shots will be posted in the next few weeks with views from each of the plots. See for yourself... it doesn’t get better than this!
